Design Manager Job Description

The Design Manager is a dynamic leadership role responsible for overseeing, executing, and delivering complex projects within the division, while also building and guiding a team of designers to support the division’s growth and strategic objectives. This role combines hands-on project designing with strategic team building, focusing on developing innovative solutions tailored to specific industry markets. You will be responsible for the technical success of division projects and for hiring, nurturing, and developing a high-performing design team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the planning, execution, and delivery of key project designs within the division, ensuring alignment with business objectives, budgets, and timelines.
  • Recruit, hire, and onboard new designers to build a high-performing design team aligned to the division’s needs.
  • Mentor and develop designers, conduct regular performance reviews, provide feedback, and support professional growth.
  • Oversee resource allocation, workload distribution, and project assignment to ensure effective project execution and team development.
  • Establish, maintain, and promote engineering best practices, methodologies, standards, and tools within the division.
  • Monitor project design performance using appropriate systems, tools, and techniques, providing regular status reports to senior leadership.
  • Identify program and project risks, proactively implement mitigation strategies, and drive issue resolution.
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement, innovation, and learning within the designing function.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional leaders (sales, operations, finance, product) to support division objectives and deliver integrated solutions to clients.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in engineering or related technical field, or minimum 4 years of experience in design management in the fire protection or construction industries.
  • Knowledge of fire suppression systems, fire alarms, and applicable NFPA codes.
  • Proven experience in hiring, developing, and mentoring engineering professionals.
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills with the ability to motivate teams.
  • Excellent organizational and time management abilities.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and industry-specific software.
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.

Expectations:

  • Participate in weekly and monthly meetings similar to current standards.
  • Assist Division Leader in monthly forecasting and OIB.
  • Participate in monthly division WIP meeting.
  • Participate in monthly Management Meeting with division key personnel.
  • Hiring and developing division-specific design teams to meet the goals of the division and of 3S.
  • Build a culture of leadership within the division, including investing in each person’s development, IDP conversations, and mentorship.
