Design Draftsperson Job Description

FLSA Classification: Full Time Non-Exempt

Overview

The Design Draftsperson is responsible for supporting the design of fire alarm and fire suppression systems by preparing design drawings, processing revisions, and assisting with technical documentation. This role works closely with the Design team, Field, Fabrication, and customers to develop accurate and code-compliant design packages that support project execution and customer requirements.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Revise and process redline drawings provided by Fabrication, Field, and/or Design teams.
  • Create design drawing packages utilizing project specifications, applicable codes, and project requirements for submission to customers and Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs).
  • Assist with the preparation, organization, and maintenance of project documentation and document revisions.
  • Attend manufacturer training classes and complete required industry training programs.
  • Obtain and maintain the licenses and certifications required for fire alarm and fire suppression system design.
  • Assist with system inspections, testing, commissioning, and startup activities as needed.
  • Provide technical and design support to other departments.
  • Conduct site surveys and field verifications to ensure proper system design and application.
  • Comply with all safety policies and procedures.
  • Assist with your division and function activities and special projects as assigned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Training and Development Expectations (as applicable)

For candidates without previous fire protection or design experience, the first six months of employment may or may not be spent gaining hands-on experience and exposure to system types, installation methods, and onsite conditions. During this period, duties and responsibilities may be to:

  • Accompany field technicians while performing fire protection inspections, testing, service, and commissioning activities.
  • Observe and learn system applications, installation practices, and field conditions that impact design.
  • Support the Design team with drafting, documentation, and project-related tasks.
  • Dedicate time to learning and becoming proficient in the design software utilized.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Technical aptitude and willingness to learn.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to learn division procedures and policies.
  • Ability to adapt quickly to changing project priorities and customer needs.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and/or other related systems.

Education and Experience

  • Experience with AutoCAD software is not required, but highly desirable and preferred.
  • Previous experience in fire protection, fire alarm, or fire suppression systems is not required, but highly desirable and preferred.
  • Experience with 3D design software such as RIM, BIM, or similar platforms.

Physical Requirements

  • Prolonged periods of sitting or standing at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Ability to work in both office and field environments if applicable.
  • Must be able to occasionally lift up to 15 pounds at times.
